Vietnam eSIM Troubleshooting

If your Vietnam eSIM is not working, the cause is usually one of a few things: the QR code was already used, the wrong data line is active, Data Roaming is off, the APN is missing, or the phone is carrier-locked. Work through the section that matches your situation below.

QR Code Will Not Scan

Usually caused by: unclear QR image, cropped screenshot, weak Wi-Fi during installation, or trying to scan on the same phone that received the email.

Try this:

  • Make sure you are on stable Wi-Fi before starting
  • Open the QR code on a second screen — a laptop, tablet, or another phone — then scan it with the device you are installing on
  • Increase screen brightness on the device showing the QR code
  • If you only have one device, use manual installation instead of scanning (the SM-DP+ address and activation code are in your order email)

Invalid Activation Code

Usually caused by: the QR image was not read cleanly — blurred, partially cut off, or too small on screen.

Try this:

  • Scan again using a cleaner, full-size version of the QR code
  • Make sure no part of the code is cropped or covered
  • If the error continues, switch to manual installation using the activation code in your email

Data Plan Cannot Be Added

Usually caused by: the eSIM profile is already installed on the device, or the QR code has already been used.

Check first before doing anything else:

  • Go to Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or SIM Manager (Android) and check whether the GoVnSIM eSIM is already listed
  • If it is already there, you do not need to scan again — go to No Service or No Internet below
  • Do not delete the eSIM as a first step — this can make the situation harder to resolve

Cellular Plans from This Carrier Cannot Be Added

Usually caused by: the phone is still locked to the original carrier, or the device model does not support eSIM in your region.

Try this:

  • On iPhone: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock — it must say No SIM restrictions
  • If it shows your carrier name, the phone is still locked — contact your home carrier to unlock it
  • On Android: confirm your specific model and region supports eSIM — not all Android variants do, even within the same brand

eSIM Is Installed but Shows No Service

Usually caused by: the eSIM line is turned off, the wrong SIM is set as the active data line, or Data Roaming is disabled.

Go through these steps in order:

  1. Go to Settings → Cellular or SIM settings and confirm the GoVnSIM eSIM line is turned on
  2. Set the GoVnSIM eSIM as your selected mobile data line
  3. Enable Data Roaming specifically for the eSIM line
  4. Restart the phone once
  5. If still no service, try toggling Airplane Mode on and off to force a network search

eSIM Has Signal but No Internet

Usually caused by: the APN (Access Point Name) is missing or has not been set correctly for the GoVnSIM network.

Try this:

  • Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Network (iPhone) or Mobile Networks → APN (Android)
  • Select the GoVnSIM eSIM line
  • Enter the APN exactly as shown in your GoVnSIM confirmation email
  • Save and toggle mobile data off and on
  • If the APN field is greyed out on iPhone, restart the phone first

You Need Calls, SMS, or OTP but Cannot Make or Receive Them

This may not be a setup problem — it may be a plan mismatch.

Standard GoVnSIM travel eSIMs (Viettel) are data-only plans. They provide internet access but do not include a Vietnamese phone number, voice calls, or SMS. If your eSIM is connecting to the internet normally, it is working as designed.

If you need a local Vietnam number for OTPs, hotel check-ins, Grab, or local contacts, you need a different plan: Vietnam eSIM with Phone Number

You Deleted the eSIM and Want to Reinstall

Important: Most travel eSIM QR codes are single-use. Once the profile is deleted, scanning the same QR code again will not work.

Contact GoVnSIM support immediately with your order number. In some cases, the eSIM profile can be reissued — but this is not guaranteed and depends on the network provider.

This is why deleting the eSIM should never be your first troubleshooting step unless our support team has specifically told you to do so.
