Most travelers do not need a Vietnamese phone number for every app they use in Vietnam. An existing Grab, WhatsApp or Zalo account can usually continue working over mobile data. A local number becomes useful when you need direct local calls, standard SMS, or a verification process that specifically accepts a Vietnamese mobile number.
The correct choice depends on the app and what you need to do with it. A phone-number eSIM can provide data and a Vietnamese number, but it cannot replace the number already registered with your bank or another existing account. Do You Need a Vietnam Number for Grab?
Usually, no. Grab’s help information says international phone numbers are accepted for account sign-up, and an existing account can be used when booking rides abroad. If your current Grab account works and you can receive any required verification message on its registered number, mobile data is enough to use Grab in Vietnam.
A Vietnamese number is still useful in practical situations:
- a driver needs to call because the pickup point is unclear;
- a food or parcel delivery partner cannot find your hotel or entrance;
- you need a reachable local number while your home SIM is turned off; or
- you are creating a separate local account and Grab accepts the new number.
Do not buy a phone-number eSIM solely because you believe Grab requires +84. It normally does not. First try your existing account over mobile data and use the in-app chat for pickup instructions.
Do You Need a Vietnam Number for Zalo?
If your Zalo account is already active, you only need mobile data or Wi-Fi to send messages and make internet calls. A data-only eSIM is sufficient for normal use.
A Vietnamese number may be useful when creating a new account or changing the number linked to an existing account, but a phone number and incoming SMS are not enough by themselves. Based on current GoVnSIM support cases, Zalo charges 5,000 VND for the OTP/service-message step used during new registration. The selected eSIM must therefore support the paid activation action and prepaid top-up.
Incoming-only plans, including current Unlimited variants with a Vietnamese number, cannot be topped up for this paid step and should not be chosen for new Zalo registration. They can still provide data and incoming services for travelers whose Zalo account is already active.

Do You Need to Change Your WhatsApp Number in Vietnam?
No. WhatsApp states that travelers using a local SIM can continue using WhatsApp with their home number. Installing a Vietnam eSIM does not require you to change the number shown in your WhatsApp account.
A practical Dual SIM setup is:
- keep WhatsApp connected to your existing number;
- set the Vietnam eSIM as the mobile-data line;
- turn off data roaming on your home SIM to reduce roaming charges; and
- keep access to your home number in case WhatsApp asks you to verify it again.
A Vietnamese number is only needed for WhatsApp if you intentionally want to create or move the account to that number. For a normal trip, changing the account number creates unnecessary recovery risk when the travel eSIM expires.
Will a Vietnam Number Receive Every OTP?
No. “OTP” describes a verification method, not one universal type of message. Each app, bank and online service decides which numbers it accepts and where it sends the code.
There are several different situations:
- Existing accounts: a bank, airline or online service normally sends the OTP to the number already saved on that account. Buying a Vietnamese number does not change the destination.
- New local registrations: some Vietnamese services may accept a new local mobile number and send a standard SMS.
- Paid verification: an app may require an outgoing SMS, service message or call. The eSIM must support that action and have sufficient prepaid balance.
- Restricted services: some platforms reject temporary, newly issued or unsupported numbers, regardless of whether they can receive normal SMS.
