Foreign travelers can use Zalo in Vietnam with either a data-only eSIM or an eSIM with a local number, depending on whether the account is already active. If you already use Zalo, mobile data is normally enough for messages and internet calls. To register a new account with a Vietnamese number, however, the eSIM must support the paid activation step and have prepaid balance available; receiving SMS alone is not sufficient.
Zalo does not state that every user must register with a Vietnamese +84 number. Zalo’s official guidance covers account creation from abroad and advises users to check the country code and phone number. However, Zalo must accept the number and complete its own activation and security checks. A local-number eSIM provides a usable mobile line; it does not bypass Zalo’s rules.
What Is Zalo and Why Is It Useful in Vietnam?
Zalo is a Vietnamese messaging and calling app. Hotels, homestay hosts, drivers, tour operators and other local contacts may use it to share pickup details, locations, photos or travel updates.
Once your account is active, Zalo works through mobile data or Wi-Fi. There is no special “Zalo data plan.” The important decision is whether you only need internet access or also need a mobile number for registration, account recovery, local calls or SMS.
Zalo Activation and Account Verification Are Not the Same
Travelers often use “verification” to describe different Zalo processes:
- Phone-number activation: confirming the mobile number when creating an account or changing the number linked to it.
- Login or recovery: proving that you still control the number connected to an existing account.
- Security or identity verification: additional checks Zalo may request because of its security rules or unusual account activity.
A compatible phone-number eSIM may help with the first two processes when it supports the SMS or call method requested by Zalo. It cannot complete identity checks for you, remove an account restriction or guarantee that Zalo will approve the account. Follow the current instructions displayed inside the Zalo app.
Do Foreigners Need a Vietnamese Phone Number for Zalo?
Not necessarily. Zalo’s official troubleshooting page includes guidance for users creating an account from abroad. A supported foreign mobile number may work if the country code is correct and the number can complete Zalo’s activation process.
Zalo requires a valid mobile number for a new account, and its guidance says landline and VoIP numbers are not supported. A Vietnamese number is therefore an option, not a universal requirement.
A local number is most useful when you:
- want hotels, drivers or other Vietnamese contacts to call or text you;
- cannot use your home number for the activation method shown by Zalo;
- need a local mobile line for other supported Vietnamese services; or
- intend to change the number linked to an existing account.
Do not change a working Zalo account to a short-term travel number without considering what happens when the eSIM expires. Losing access to the linked number can make future login or recovery more difficult.

GoVnSIM’s current Vietnam eSIM with phone number range includes selected MobiFone and VinaPhone plans with a Vietnamese number and incoming SMS. However, only plans that support top-up and the required paid outgoing action should be chosen for a new Zalo registration.
Important: Current Unlimited plans with a Vietnamese number are incoming-only and do not support prepaid top-up. They can be used for mobile data, local incoming services and an already-active Zalo account, but they are not suitable for registering a new Zalo account.
The current Viettel tourist eSIM is data-only. It is suitable for using an existing Zalo account over mobile data, but it cannot receive an activation SMS because it has no Vietnamese phone number.
How to Register Zalo With a Vietnam eSIM
These steps apply only to an eSIM plan that includes a Vietnamese mobile number. Zalo can change its app screens and activation methods, so use the instructions displayed in the latest version of the app if they differ.
- Install the eSIM from its QR code. Follow the setup guide supplied with your order. Do not delete the profile after installation because many travel eSIM QR codes can be installed only once.
- Activate the line in Vietnam. Confirm that it has connected to the local network and that the correct eSIM is enabled for calls and SMS.
- Find your Vietnamese number. Use the instructions supplied with the plan or ask GoVnSIM support if the number is not displayed clearly.
- Check top-up support and balance. For the current Zalo registration flow, keep at least 5,000 VND available for the paid OTP/service-message step. A plan with no top-up capability is not suitable.
- Open the latest version of Zalo. Choose the option to register and enter the requested name and mobile number.
- Select Vietnam (+84). Enter the mobile number in the format requested by Zalo. Do not enter both +84 and the local leading zero if the app has already selected Vietnam.
- Complete the paid activation step. Follow the SMS or call method shown by Zalo and use the latest code provided.
- Enter the latest activation code and complete any additional security steps requested by Zalo.
Avoid requesting several codes in quick succession. Too many attempts can cause a delay, an expired code or an additional Zalo security check.
What to Do If the Zalo Activation Code Does Not Arrive
- Confirm that the eSIM includes a phone number. A data-only plan cannot receive SMS or activation calls.
- Check the number type. Zalo says it does not support landline or VoIP numbers.
- Check the country code and number format. An incorrect country or duplicated leading zero can make the number invalid.
- Confirm that the line is active in Vietnam. Your phone should show the relevant local carrier, and the eSIM must be enabled.
- Choose the correct SIM for calls and SMS. This is particularly important when your home SIM remains active in a Dual SIM phone.
- Confirm that the plan supports the paid Zalo step. Receiving normal SMS does not mean the line can send a chargeable service message.
- Check prepaid balance. Active data and incoming SMS do not mean the line has enough usable credit for Zalo’s paid activation step.
- Wait before requesting another code. Use only the newest code, because an earlier one may have expired.

Why Top-Up Support Matters for Zalo Registration
Based on current GoVnSIM customer-support cases, Zalo charges 5,000 VND for the OTP/service-message step used during new registration. This is a Zalo service charge, not a fee collected by GoVnSIM.
Many phone-number eSIMs start with 0 VND prepaid balance. Some can be topped up, while others—including current incoming-only Unlimited variants—do not support top-up or paid outgoing SMS. Therefore, an eSIM can have a real Vietnamese number and receive normal SMS but still be unable to complete a new Zalo registration.
Bundled domestic SMS allowances also may not cover Zalo’s paid service message. For registration, choose a top-up-supported plan and add enough prepaid credit before requesting the OTP. Adding balance cannot make a data-only or non-top-up plan compatible, and it cannot override Zalo’s account rules.

Should You Change the Number on an Existing Zalo Account?
If your account works and you still control its registered number, keep it for a short trip and use the Vietnam eSIM for mobile data.
If you no longer control the old number or need to move the account to a long-term Vietnamese number, use Zalo’s official Change phone number function under Account and Security. Zalo states that one account is linked to one phone number at a time. This is a number change, not the addition of a backup number.
GoVnSIM travel numbers are not guaranteed to remain available after the plan expires. Prepaid balance top-up also does not automatically extend the eSIM’s data validity or reserve the number. Contact support before expiry if retaining the number is important.
